14-R Remembers Our Friend and Leo Founder, Lion William "Bill" Ernst
While attending the International Convention in July, I received word that District 14-R lost a Lion member. This was no ordinary Lion. This man became a Lion in 1943. In 1957, Lion Bill was co-founder of the first Leo Club, not only in District 14-R, but in the world. Leo clubs have grown a lot since 1957! Any they are still growing now.
With the belief of Lionism and our youth, Lion Bill worked very hard and was a very productive Lion. He was 92 years old when he passed away. His wife, Doris, lost not only her husband, but her best friend as well. And we Lions, not only lost a Lion member, but we lost a great friend.
The youth of today are our Lions and leaders of tomorrow. I think we can all agree that we need to keep working hard to do our best to keep our youth educated. We all believe as Lion Bill did, "Lionism" is a great belief and Lions Clubs International is the best service organization in the world. We Lions, community and family leaders, are dedicated to our service and we need to stay in tune with our youth. Lion Bill gave our youth a wonderful opportunity to become a Leo, and remember that these Leos are also our future Lions. Let us all do our part to support the beliefs of Lion Bill, and all Lions.
Lion Bill, "Thank You" for everything you did for our organization. "Thank You" for all you did for your family and community. We will remember you always.

Remembering Harry
Missing from our District Rally for the first time in decades was the gentle man with the camera. Lion Harry Selko of the Lower Gwynedd Lions passed away this past month. Our thoughts and prayers are with his widow, Lion Kent. Those of us who knew Harry remember how his soft-spoken manner and quiet dignity graced our District for so many years.
We recall with joy the happy moments, the many Melvin Jones Dinners where he photographed the recipients with their spouses and the District Governor, the Cabinet Meeting where he himself received a Melvin Jones Fellowship, Lionism's highest award (and how Lion Kent leapt to her feet at the announcement and led the standing ovation), the many events in which he drove the Montgomery County Association for the Blind van, the way he simply made our lives richer for his presence.
My personal memory of Harry is of him driving the MCAB van in the Narberth Memorial Day Parade. We are one of the few municipalities still allowed to throw candy from the vehicles -- I remember Harry tossing out candy and steering at the same time, displaying a coordination neither Kent nor I thought he had. I remember him blushing sheepishly as several teenage girls began flirting with him (and Kent and I trying so hard not to giggle). Harry's placid demeanor could not hide his deep commitment for those for whom he cared: his family, his friends, fellow Lions, and the constituancy we serve.
Lion Harry, you have fought the good fight, you have kept the faith. By serving the "least of these", you have fulfilled your destiny. Rest in peace.
